Glaucoma Diagnosis through AI-Generated Insights: A Dual Modality Perspective - OCT vs Fundus

Capstone Project · New Zealand

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neurone disease and it is among the major causes of blindness in the world. Prompt and proper diagnosis is the solution to loss of vision. Recent-past developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) and generative models have enhanced greatly the accuracy and automation of glaucoma detection through the retinal imaging modalities. This review assesses the present trends and future possibilities of AI application in glaucoma diagnosis and particularly in multimodal imaging strategies based on fundus photography and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). We point out the shortcomings of existing DL models, present the generative AI techniques, and comment on the combination of fundus and OCT imaging to increase diagnostic accuracy. There are also some challenges over the ongoing issues of clinical translation, data constraints, interpretability, and the use of large multi-modal models described in the review. Lastly, we offer the future research potential that can result in more robust, explainable, and fair AI solutions in ophthalmology.
